Working with text (iPad)

Layouts on the Canva app come with great font pairings and beautiful typesetting. To easily make changes to text styling, tap on the text box you wish to edit.

Styling Text


To change the font:

  1. Double tap on the text you’d like to change the font of. This will reveal the text toolbar below the design.
  2. Tap on the font selector on the leftmost side of the text toolbar.
  3. Scroll through the options and tap on the font you’d like to apply.

To change the font color:

  1. Double tap on the text you’d like to change the color of. This will reveal the text toolbar below the design.
  2. Tap on the circle color picker on the text toolbar.
  3. Choose a color from the offered default selection. You can also choose a custom color by tapping on the + button.

To change the font size:

  1. Double tap on the text you’d like to change the color of. This will reveal the text toolbar below the design.
  2. There are two ways to change the font size. The first way is by tapping on the number on the text toolbar. This will load a list of preset values. Choose the font size you’d like to apply.
  3. The second way to change your font size is by tapping on the As beside the font size number. Tapping on the smaller A will decrease the font size while tapping on the bigger A will increase it.

To change the alignment:

  1. Double tap on the text you’d like to change the color of. This will reveal the text toolbar below the design.
  2. Tap on any of the alignment buttons on the right side of the text toolbar. The available alignment options are Left, Center, and Right.

To add font emphasis:

  1. Double tap on the text you’d like to emphasize. This will reveal the text toolbar below the design.
  2. Tap on the Bold or Italic options on the text toolbar.

note: There are some fonts that cannot be emphasized. Alternatively, you can choose another font from our selection.

To adjust text spacing:

  1. Tap on the text you’d like to adjust the spacing of. A toolbar will appear either on the top or bottom of the text.
  2. Tap on Text Spacing.
  3. Drag the anchors to the left to decrease or to the right to increase either letter spacing or line height.

To rotate text:

  1. Tap on the text you’d like to rotate.
  2. Locate the rotate handle, usually located below the text box, and drag it to rotate in the direction you want.

To arrange or layer text:

  1. Tap on the text you’d like to arrange. A toolbar will appear either on the top or bottom of the text.
  2. Tap on Up layer to bring forward the text or Down layer to bring it to the back multiple times as needed.

To edit text transparency:

  1. Tap on the text you’d like to change its transparency. A toolbar will appear either on the top or bottom of the text.
  2. Tap on the Transparency icon, the one to the left of “Text spacing.”
  3. Drag the handle to the left to decrease transparency or to the right to increase it.

Editing content


You can also easily change the preset template text to your own.

To edit text:

  1. Double tap the text you’d like to edit. This will prompt the keyboard to appear.
  2. Erase all the text in the field if you’d like and type in your new text.

Note that you can edit content in any text box in the same way you would text anywhere else on your iPad.

  • To delete an entire string of content, tap the backspace button on the iPad keyboard.
  • To delete a specific word, long tap the word to reveal iPad’s default menu and then tap on Select. This will also open the text edit menu.

Adding text


There are two different ways that you can add text to your design – add your own custom text or choose from our template texts.

To add custom text:

  1. Tap on the Text tab found on the right side of the screen.
  2. Tap on any of the Add text options below the search bar. This will add a text box to your design.
  3. Double tap on the text box and type in or copy-paste your desired text.
  4. Edit the text’s look as necessary.

To add textholders or template text:

  1. Tap on the Text tab found on the right side of the screen.
  2. Scroll through the selection of pre-designed textholders and tap on the one you like. This will add the selected textholder on your design.
  3. Double tap on the textholder and type in or copy-paste your desired text.
  4. Edit the text’s look as necessary.

Delete a text box


To delete an entire text box:

  1. Tap on the textbox you’d like to delete. A toolbar will appear either on the top or bottom of the text.
  2. Tap on the Trash button.
