Add and replace templates

Templates make it easy to come up with amazing, professional-looking designs in a matter of minutes. Templates are the first things you see in the side panel after opening the editor.

There are several ways to add and replace templates, depending on your Canva editor version. Head over to our article about Canva 1.0 and 2.0 to find out which version you’re using.

Add and replace templates (Canva 2.0)

To add and replace templates:

  1. Click on the Templates tab.
  2. Browse or use Search to find a specific template.
  3. Click on a template to apply it to your page.
  4. To replace the template on your page, click on a new template.

warning: Replacing an existing template with a new one will overwrite whatever is on the page. You can duplicate a page if you wish to keep a copy.

Add layouts (Canva 1.0)

To add a one-page layout to your design:

  1. Click on the Layout tab within your object panel.
  2. Browse through the options provided.
  3. Once you’ve found a layout you like, click on it to bring it on your page.

Canva also has multi-page layouts for design types which commonly run over many pages, such as presentations.

To add a multi-page layout:

  1. Click on the Layouts tab in your object panel.
  2. Browse through the options provided. Once you’ve found a layout you like, click on it to bring up all of the pages in the layout.
  3. Click on the page you wish to add to your design.
  4. Add a new page to your design.
  5. Add the second page of the layout.
  6. Repeat until you have added all of the layout pages you wish to have in your design.

note: Looking for the template that best fits your needs? Head over to our Templates page. You’ll be able to find the different types of layouts available – from business cards to report cards. Hover over a design you like and click Edit this template to work with it.

Remove a layout (Canva 1.0)

Had a change of heart about a layout? You can change a layout by clicking on the Layouts tab within your object panel and selecting a new one you’d like to work with.

note: A “Replace page content” warning will appear if you’ve made any changes on your page before clicking on a new layout. This is because changing layouts will delete any progress you’ve made on a previous layout.

Alternatively, if you wish to completely delete a layout:

  1. Select all of the elements in your layout.
  2. Click on the Trash icon displayed in the editor toolbar at the top the screen.

note: To learn about using layouts in your mobile devices, you can head over to Create a new design (Android) or Create a new design (iOS).
