Search for free Canva images

Canva’s content library has tons of free photos, illustrations, icons, and other elements that you can use in your designs.

note: Free elements will always have a FREE tag at the bottom right corner of the thumbnail.

There are several ways to search for free elements, depending on your Canva editor version. Head over to our article about Canva 1.0 and 2.0 to find out which version you’re using.

Search for free Canva images (Canva 2.0)

As a Canva for Work user, you can set search filters to easily search for free images. To do so:

  1. Create or open a design.
  2. Click on the Elements tab.
  3. Click on the search field and select Apply a search filter.
  4. Click on the drop-down button and select Free.
  5. Enter a keyword. This pulls up all relevant results for your search.
  6. Narrow down your search results by clicking on the Photos or Graphics tabs found beneath the search bar.
  7. Click on an element to add to your design.

Browse free images (Canva 2.0)

Canva shows free images by category for easy browsing.

To browse for free images:

  1. Create or open a design.
  2. Click on the Elements tab.
  3. Select All > across Free  Photos.
  4. Click on the Photos or Graphics tab to find free photos and graphics by category.
  5. Click on an image to add to your design.

Search for free elements (Canva 1.0)

If you need a specific element you’ll be able to find it faster by using the search bar.

To search for a free element:

  1. Open an existing design or create a new design.
  2. Click on the search bar just above the object panel.
  3. Type in a keyword and hit Enter on your keyboard. This pulls up all relevant results for your search.
  4. Look for photos with the ‘Free’ tag on their thumbnails.
  5. Filter the results to just Photos or Illustrations by clicking on the respective tabs found beneath the search bar.
  6. Click on an element to add to your design.

As a Canva for Work user, you can also filter your search to show only free content. Check out our Free Canva for Work content article to learn how.

Browse free elements (Canva 1.0)

If you’d like to see what elements are available on Canva, you can always browse through folders in the object panel.

To browse for free elements:

  1. Open an existing design or create a new design.
  2. Click on the Elements tab then select the folder of the kind of element you’re looking for.
  3. Scroll down to browse the available Canva elements.
  4. Select elements with the ‘Free’ tag on their thumbnails.
  5. Click on an element to add to your design.
